Norseboat News - January 2005
NorseBoat 17.5 Now in Full Production
NorseBoat Limited recently marked the beginning of full-scale production of the NorseBoat 17.5 Sailing and Rowing Cruiser on Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada. All of the tooling and the first six boats were built by a subcontractor in mid-coast Maine near designer Chuck Paine's office. Now these lovely lapstrake boats are produced on PEI using an epoxy-based resin/glass composite in an advanced vacuum-bag system. The result is a strong yet lightweight boat with consistently high quality while using up to 40% less resin.
Consumer interest and industry support has been strong for this innovative watercraft. Current production capacity of one boat per week can grow to two boats per week to meet expected demand.
NorseBoat Booking For Spring/Summer Delivery
NorseBoat Limited is now taking orders for spring/summer delivery. A 15% deposit secures a place in the production schedule. Customers are encouraged to order early to ensure they have a new NorseBoat for the 2005 season.
Three Major Markets For NorseBoat 17.5
The versatile NorseBoat 17.5 can be used for sailing, rowing and as a camp-cruiser, and it appeals to three major markets. Those markets include cruising sailors who want to downsize or simplify their sailing experience; sea kayakers who want to upgrade, include their families or go further and faster; and day sailors who want a dinghy that is aesthetically pleasing, has good performance, and can be rowed as well as sailed. Two other markets are becoming apparent: using the NorseBoat as a tender for a power yacht (she looks sweet on the aft deck of a classic power cruiser), or as a rowing picnic boat for gentle explorations on rivers and in other protected waters.
Owner-Agents Serve Local Markets
NorseBoat Limited sell boats and options direct to customers around the world. To assist our direct sales effort a number of NorseBoat owners are being enlisted to provide grassroots marketing and sales support to customers in prime sailing areas. Owner-agents make their NorseBoats available for viewing and demonstration sails, answer questions, and provide sales support. They may also provide other services such as sailing lessons, annual boat storage and maintenance, boat rentals, eco-excursions, and organizing local NorseBoat events.
NorseBoat Web Site Full Of Info & Photos
The official NorseBoat web site (www.norseboat.com) has detailed information, specifications, reviews, and loads of photos in the Gallery section. The web site also has downloads of literature, articles and publicity releases in the Media section. High resolution versions of the photos on the site are available for publication in print or web-based media.
West Coast Distribution Center
A new NorseBoat distribution center is being set up approximately 75 miles south of Portland, Oregon near Interstate 5. Ron Loe of Castle Manufacturing in Corvallis will be able to provide local sales support and will offer west coast customers a convenient pick-up location or delivery of individual boats anywhere between Seattle and San Francisco. Castle Manufacturing will also be supplying a wood package option for NorseBoats. The wood package will include a beautiful wood finish on the U-shaped seats and matching thwarts, plus wood seat rails, hatch covers, and whale stripe on the hull.
NorseBoat Turn Heads In Annapolis and St. Pete
The most common comment heard in Annapolis and St. Pete during fall 2004 was, "This is the prettiest boat in the show!" Many show-goers had come specifically to see the NorseBoat, and it was apparent from customer feedback that there is a growing awareness of this boat and its reputation as an affordable, classic little yacht with big performance. In St. Pete there was one boat displayed on land and another in the water demonstrating her sailing and rowing proficiency.
Winter Boat Shows To Include Philadelphia and Miami
NorseBoat Limited will be displaying at the upcoming Strictly Sail shows in Philadelphia and Miami. Please stop by to view a NorseBoat and speak with President Kevin Jeffrey.
Rigging Refinements
To provide more controlled reefing and to retain good shape in the peak of the sail when reefed we have made several improvements to the NorseBoat's rigging. The boom gooseneck is now fixed to the carbon-fiber mast roughly 12 inches above the deck level, and the gaff is now controlled by a separate peak halyard that runs through a swivel block near the top of the mast. These refinements make the boat safer and easier to sail. We also now offer an optional carbon-fiber boom to replace the standard spruce boom.
New Installation of Manual Bilge Pump Option
For our Whale Compac 50 manual bilge pump option we now install a drain in the boat sole just aft of the centerboard trunk. Water that finds its way into the cockpit drains into the skeg, which serves as a sump for the bilge pump intake. The bilge pump is located out of sight in the aft storage compartment; a flush-mounted cover is all that is seen in the cockpit. During use the pump cover is opened and the pump handle is retrieved from its mount in the aft storage compartment and is inserted into the pump. When pumping the water is taken from the skeg and sent to a thru-hull fitting near the stern.
C-Cushions Becomes Newest NorseBoat Supplier
This premier supplier of seat cushions for boats is now supplying a cushion package for NorseBoats. The 1" thick closed cell foam color cushions cover the entire U-shaped seat in the cockpit and both rowing thwarts. They provide comfort, serve as additional safety flotation, and can be reconfigured to cover the full-size double berth in the camping mode.
